Review of Shapes & Numbers

Shapes & Numbers is a fast-paced puzzle game that challenges players to match the correct shape and number combinations within a limited time frame. The gameplay centers around clearing a 3x3 board, with each successful round requiring quicker responses from the player. Unique to this game is the penalty for incorrect answers, which deducts precious time from the clock. Achieving a flawless round without mistakes unlocks a perfect clear bonus, adding an exciting layer of challenge.

This game emerged from an interesting challenge: to develop and publish a game on the App Store using only the Swift Playgrounds app for iPad. While Swift Playgrounds is primarily an educational tool rather than a dedicated game development platform, Shapes & Numbers exemplifies that engaging games can indeed be created within its constraints. However, there are notable limitations in design and functionality that restrict some capabilities. For instance, the lack of Game Center integration means players miss out on potential leaderboards, and there is no support for .sks files to incorporate particle effects. Additionally, rotating the device can lead to gameplay issues, as locking the orientation to portrait mode is not straightforward.

Despite these obstacles, it is worth considering that Swift Playgrounds is still in its early stages. One can hope that Apple will address these limitations in future iterations, such as Swift Playgrounds 5, by offering more intuitive tools for developing casual games like Shapes & Numbers.
